BALER GREEN ENAMEL

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Pruett-Schaffer’s #34-84 Green Enamel is a semi to high gloss, air-drying, solvent based alkyd paint. It is designed as a spray applied, direct-to-metal finish coat. It is fast drying and has good flexibility, corrosion resistance, and exterior durability.

RECOMMENDED USES

This product is recommended for general maintenance use on railcars, dumpsters, storage tanks, machinery, and other steel equipment wherever a good quality alkyd finish is needed. It exhibits exceptional adhesion to a wide variety of substrates including minimally prepared cold rolled steel, forgings, castings, and existing coatings. This coating is specially recommended for use over rough surfaces or where extensive surface preparation will not be performed, as the high build finish of this paint will hide many of the surface defects that would be readily apparent with a lower solids gloss paint. Not recommended for immersion service or for areas subject to severe chemical exposure.

SURFACE PREPARATION

For severe service, metal substrates should be blasted to SSPC-SP-6 minimum, with a 1 mil blast profile, and primed with a good quality alkyd primer (such as Pruett-Schaffer #30-13002). This coating is very tolerant of less than perfect surface preparation, so hand tool cleaning may be sufficient for some uses. At a minimum for acceptable performance, surfaces to be coated must be clean and

dry, and free of oil/grease, loose rust/paint, weld spatter, burning slag, dust, and chalk. Feather all rough or sharp edges. Chalky or dusty surfaces should be power washed and allowed to dry completely.

THINNING

Under normal conditions no thinning is necessary. Thin if necessary for spraying with xylol or toluol. To maintain VOC compliance use Tertiary Butyl Acetate or Acetone. Add a little at a time with constant gentle agitation to a maximum of 5% by volume. In ambient temperatures over 85 F Aromatic 100 or Aromatic 150 may be used if “dry spraying” occurs.

APPLICATION EQUIPMENT

May be applied by siphon, air-assisted or airless spray. Airless spray gives the best results, use .015-.019 inch tip size. If used, brushes should be of polyester or nylon construction. Apply to 1.5-2 mils dry film thickness, or 3.0-4.0 mils wet film.

DRYING TIME

Dries tack free in less than 15 minutes s at 77 F. Dry to recoat in less than one hour. Force drying ovens may be used, allow 10 minutes minimum for flashoff of solvent before heating.

CLEANUP

Clean equipment with xylol or toluol before the film dries.

ENVIRONMENTAL

This product meets current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and ozone reactive emissions. It is VOC compliant for most industrial applications, and contains no lead or chromate. VOC’s can be further reduced by substituting conventional solvents with exempt ones’ ie Acetone or Tertiary Butyl Acetate.
