GENERAL
DESCRIPTION Pruett-Schaffer’s
#34-62 Aluminum Enamel is an semi gloss, fast air drying, solvent based alkyd
paint. It is designed as a brush or
spray applied, finish coat for use over primer. It exhibits good flexibility, corrosion resistance, exterior
durability, and heat resistance to 250 °F. RECOMMENDED
USES This
product is recommended for general maintenance use on railcars, storage
tanks, machinery, and other steel equipment wherever a good quality alkyd
finish is needed. It exhibits exceptional adhesion to a wide variety of
substrates including minimally prepared cold rolled steel, forgings,
castings, and existing coatings. This coating is specially recommended for
use over rough surfaces or where extensive surface preparation will not be
performed, as the semi gloss finish of this paint will hide many of the
surface defects that would be readily apparent with a high gloss paint. Not recommended for immersion service, for
areas subject to severe chemical exposure or heat greater than 300 °F. SURFACE
PREPARATION For
severe service, metal substrates should be blasted to SSPC-SP-6 minimum, with
a 1 mil blast profile, and primed with a good quality alkyd primer (such as
Pruett-Schaffer #30-12620). This
coating is very tolerant of less than perfect surface preparation, so hand
tool cleaning may be sufficient for some uses. |
At
a minimum for acceptable performance, surfaces to be coated must be clean and
dry, and free of oil/grease, loose rust/paint, weld spatter, burning slag,
dust, and chalk. Feather all rough or
sharp edges. Chalky or dusty surfaces
should be power washed and allowed to dry completely. THINNING Under
normal conditions no thinning is necessary.
Thin if necessary for spraying with xylol or toluol. Add a little at a time with constant
gentle agitation to a maximum of 5% by volume. In ambient temperatures over 85 0F
Aromatic 100 or Aromatic 150 may be used if “dry spraying” occurs. APPLICATION
EQUIPMENT May
be applied by brush or airless spray.
Airless spray gives the best results, use .015-.020 inch tip
size. Brushes should be of polyester
or nylon construction. If applying
with a cup type spray gun, thinning may improve application. Apply to 2-3 mils dry film thickness
maximum. DRYING
TIME Dries
to recoat or stencil in 3 to 4 hours at 77 0F.
Dry to light handling in 24 hours.
Force drying ovens may be used, allow 30 minutes minimum for flashoff
of solvent before heating. CLEANUP Clean
equipment with xylol or toluol before the film dries. |
ENVIRONMENTAL This
product meets current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and
ozone reactive emissions. It is VOC
compliant for the architectural maintenance industry, and contains no lead,
chromate, or zinc. PHYSICAL
