GENERAL
DESCRIPTION Pruett-Schaffer’s
#34-13187 Gray Enamel is a high
gloss, air drying, solvent based alkyd paint. It is designed to be spray applied only.
#34-13187 exhibits good flexibility, corrosion resistance, and exterior
durability. The solvent blend is rich in ketones to improve polarity for electrostatic spray use. # 34 Series QD
Enamels may be applied direct-to-metal or over primer. RECOMMENDED
USES #34-64
is recommended for general maintenance use on railcars, storage tanks,
machinery, and other steel substrates.
It is formulated as a good quality high gloss alkyd finish. This
coating exhibits exceptional adhesion to a wide variety of substrates including
minimally prepared cold rolled steel, forgings, castings, and existing
coatings. It is recommended for use
over rough surfaces or where extensive surface preparation will not be
performed. The high build finish of this paint will hide many of the surface
defects which are evident when using a lower solids gloss paint. NOTE: Not recommended for immersion service or
for areas subject to severe chemical exposure. SURFACE
PREPARATION For
severe service, metal substrates should be blasted to SSPC-SP-6 minimum, with
a 1 mil blast profile, and primed with a good quality alkyd primer (such as
Pruett-Schaffer #30-12620). This
coating is very tolerant of less than perfect surface preparation, so hand
tool cleaning may be sufficient for some uses. At a minimum for acceptable performance, surfaces to be coated
must be clean and |
dry,
and free of oil, grease, loose rust, loose paint, weld spatter, burning slag,
dust, and chalk. Feather all rough or
sharp edges. Chalky or dusty surfaces
should be power washed and allowed to dry completely. THINNING Under
normal conditions no thinning is necessary.
Thin if necessary for spraying with xylol or toluol if more polarity
is required use MIBK. Add a little at
a time with constant gentle agitation to a maximum of 5% by volume. In ambient temperatures over 85 0F
Aromatic 100 or Aromatic 150 may be used if “dry spraying” occurs. APPLICATION
EQUIPMENT May
be applied by pressure pot, air-assisted or airless spray. Airless spray gives the best results, use
.012-.017 inch tip size.. If applying
with a cup type spray gun, thinning may improve application. Apply to 1.5-3.5 mils dry film thickness,
or 3-7 mils wet film. DRYING
TIME Dries
to touch in about 15 minutes @ 1.5 mils DFT. Dry to recoat or stencil in 1 to
2 hours at 77 0F. Dry to light handling in 24 hours. Final
cure time is about one week. Force drying ovens may be used, allow 30 minutes
minimum for flashoff of solvent before heating. CLEANUP Clean
equipment with xylol or toluol before the film dries. |
