GENERAL
DESCRIPTION Pruett-Schaffer’s
#30-664 Red Univer-sal Primer is a solvent-based, high solids, rust
inhibitive primer paint intended for application over steel surfaces. It is
designed to be brush or roller applied, but spray application is the
preferred method. This primer serves as a cost-effective universal primer or
tie coat, having good application properties requiring minimal surface
preparation. RECOMMENDED
USES This
product is recommended for general maintenance use on steel substrates
wherever a good quality universal alkyd primer is needed. It may be topcoated
with water or solvent based alkyds, acrylics, vinyls, epoxies, or urethanes.
It exhibits good early hardness development, and excellent water, salt,
hydrocarbon solvent, and lacquer resistance. This primer is specially recommended
for use over surfaces where extensive preparation will not be performed, as
the alkyd formulation of this paint wets rusty and oily substrates
efficiently and develops good adhesion. The in-service temperature limit is
approximately 300 0F. This
product is not recommended for water immersion service or for use over wood
or other dimensionally variable substrates. Although this paint exhibits good
chemical resistance in normal industrial environments, it is not recommended
for severe chemical exposures. |
SURFACE
PREPARATION For
best results, substrates should be blasted to SSPC-SP-6 commercial blast with
a 1 mil profile, and all rough areas and sharp edges smoothed. This coating is tolerant of less than
perfect surface preparation however, and hand or power tool preparation such
as brushing, sanding or water blasting may be sufficient for many
applications. At a minimum for
acceptable performance, surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry, free of
heavy oil and grease, loose rust and paint, weld spatter, burning slag, dust,
and chalk. THINNING Under
normal conditions, no thinning is necessary. When required for proper
spraying, thin with TT-T-306c Thinner.
Add a little at a time with constant gentle agitation to a maximum of
20% by volume. APPLICATION
EQUIPMENT May
be applied by brush, roller, or airless spray equipment. Airless spray gives the best results, use
.015-.020 inch tip size. Brushes
should be of polyester or nylon construction. Apply to a dry film thickness
of 0.9-1.1 mils. DRYING
TIME Dry tack free in
10-20 minutes, dry to light handling in 45 minutes, dry to recoat in 4 hours
at 77 0F. Force
drying ovens may be used; allow 15 minutes minimum for flashoff of solvent
before heating. |
CLEANUP Clean
equipment with xylol or toluol before the film dries. CERTIFICATION This
coating meets or exceeds raw materials and performance standards as required
by Federal Specification TT-P-664d
