GENERAL
DESCRIPTION Pruett-Schaffer’s
#30-34 Gray Primer is a solvent based
alkyd paint modified with drying oils for minimized overspray & improved
leveling and adhesion. It is designed
as a brush or spray applied corrosion preventative metal primer. It is a cost effective general use primer,
having good application properties, exterior durability, and superior
adhesion and flexibility. RECOMMENDED
USES This
product is recommended for general maintenance use on railcars, storage
tanks, machinery, and other steel equipment wherever a good quality alkyd
primer is needed. It exhibits exceptional adhesion to a wide variety of
substrates including minimally prepared cold rolled steel, forgings,
castings, and existing coatings. This primer is specially recommended for use
over surfaces where extensive preparation will not be performed, as the long
oil length alkyd formulation of this paint wets rusty and oily substrates
efficiently and develops good adhesion.
May be used as a primer or tie coat suitable for overcoating with
water or solvent based alkyds. The in
service temperature limit is approximately 350 0F. This
product is not recommended for immersion service, for areas subject to severe
chemical exposure, or for use over wood.
A test patch to determine compatibility is recommended before
topcoating with solvent based acrylic, vinyl, epoxy, or urethane coatings as
the active oxygenated solvents sometimes present in these coatings may cause
newly applied primer to blister or disbond. |
SURFACE
PREPARATION For
best results, substrates should be blasted to SSPC-SP-6 commercial blast with
a 1-mil profile, and all rough areas and sharp edges smoothed. This coating is tolerant of less than
perfect surface preparation however, and hand or power tool preparation such
as brushing, sanding or water blasting may be sufficient for many
applications. At a minimum for
acceptable performance, surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry, free of heavy
oil and grease, loose rust and paint, weld spatter, burning slag, dust, and
chalk. THINNING Under
normal conditions no thinning is necessary; if required for proper spraying
thin with xylol or toluol. Add a
little at a time with constant gentle agitation to a maximum of 5% by
volume. In ambient temperatures over
85 0F Aromatic
100 or Aromatic 150 may be used if “dry spraying” occurs. APPLICATION
EQUIPMENT May
be applied by brush or airless spray equipment. Airless spray gives the best results, use .015-.020 inch tip
size. Brushes should be of polyester
or nylon construction. Apply to 3-6
mils wet film thickness, which yields 1.5-3 mils dry film. DRYING
TIME Under
ideal conditions dries tack free in 60 minutes, dry to light handling and
recoat overnight at 77 0F. Force
drying ovens may be used, allow 15 minutes minimum for flashoff of solvent
before heating. |
CLEANUP Clean
