SANDSTONE HEAT RESISTING PRIMER |
|
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Pruett-Schaffer’s Sandstone Primer is a fast drying, weldable, solvent based silicone-alkyd paint. It is designed as a brush or spray applied, corrosion preventative metal primer. It is high end metal primer, having excellent application properties, exterior durability, heat resistance and superior adhesion and flexibility. This product can be used as a primer or a flat topcoat.
RECOMMENDED USES
This coating exhibits exceptional weathering and color retention, among the best for all alkyd paints, and is recommended for use on steel structures, storage tanks, machinery, and buildings where a high performance alkyd finish is required. Because of its long service life but higher initial cost, it is specially recommended for use where surface preparation and repainting is difficult or expensive. This paint has good heat resistance compared to standard alkyds, and will resist discoloration and embrittlement to 400 F. It can be used on motors, machinery, hot pipes, and near furnaces where a standard alkyd would fail quickly.
SURFACE PREPARATION
For best results, substrates should be blasted to SSPC-SP-6 commercial blast with a 1 mil profile, and all rough areas and sharp edges smoothed. Mill scale must be removed for heat resisting applications, otherwise expansion & contraction of the metal could cause it to disbond. This coating |
is tolerant of less than perfect surface preparation however, and hand or power tool preparation such as brushing, sanding or water blasting may be sufficient for many applications. At a minimum for acceptable performance, surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry, free of heavy oil and grease, loose rust and paint, weld spatter, burning slag, dust, and chalk.
THINNING
Under normal conditions no thinning is necessary; if required for proper spraying thin with xylol or toluol. Add a little at a time with constant gentle agitation to a maximum of 5% by volume. In ambient temperatures over 85 F Aromatic 100 or Aromatic 150 may be used if “dry spraying” occurs.
APPLICATION
EQUIPMENT
May be applied by brush or airless spray equipment. Airless spray gives the best results, use .015-.020 inch tip size. Brushes should be of polyester or nylon construction. Apply to 3-6 mils wet film thickness, which yields 1.5-3 mils dry film.
DRYING TIME
Dries tack free in 15-30 minutes, dry to light handling in 1 hour, dry to recoat in 2 hours at 77 F. Force drying ovens may be used, allow 15 minutes minimum for flashoff of solvent before heating.
CLEANUP
Clean equipment with xylol or toluol before the film dries.
