GENERAL
DESCRIPTION Pruett-Schaffer’s
#30-13000 Red Universal Primer is a fast drying, solvent-based primer paint
based on a phenolic modified alkyd.
It is designed as a brush or spray applied, corrosion preventative
ferrous metal primer. It serves as a cost-effective universal primer or tie
coat, having good application properties, good exterior durability, and
superior adhesion and abrasion resistance. RECOMMENDED
USES This
product is recommended for general maintenance use on rail cars, truck
frames, storage tanks, machinery, and other steel structures and equipment
wherever a good quality universal alkyd primer is needed. It may be topcoated
with water or solvent based alkyds, acrylics, vinyls, epoxies, or urethanes.
This primer is specially recommended for use over surfaces where extensive
preparation will not be performed, as the alkyd formulation of this paint
wets rusty and oily substrates efficiently and develops good adhesion. This
primer dries very quickly, and may be used as a "dry fall" primer
in areas where overspray may be a concern. The in- service temperature limit
is approximately 300 0F. This
product is not recommended for water immersion service or for use over wood
or other dimensionally variable substrates. Although this paint exhibits good
salt and chemical resistance in normal industrial environments, it is not
recommended for severe chemical exposures. |
SURFACE
PREPARATION For
best results, substrates should be blasted to SSPC-SP-6 commercial blast with
a 1 mil profile, and all rough areas and sharp edges smoothed. This coating is tolerant of less than
perfect surface preparation however, and hand or power tool preparation such
as brushing, sanding or water blasting may be sufficient for many
applications. At a minimum for
acceptable performance, surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry, free of
heavy oil and grease, loose rust and paint, weld spatter, burning slag, dust,
and chalk. THINNING Under
normal conditions, no thinning is necessary; if required for proper spraying
thin with xylol or toluol. Add a
little at a time with constant gentle agitation to a maximum of 5% by volume. In ambient temperatures over 85 0F
Aromatic 100 or Aromatic 150 may be used if “dry spraying” occurs. APPLICATION
EQUIPMENT May
be applied by brush or airless spray equipment. Airless spray gives the best results, use .015-.020 inch tip
size. Brushes should be of polyester
or nylon construction. Apply to 3-6
mils wet film thickness, which yields 1.5-3 mils dry film. DRYING
TIME Dries
tack free in 15-30 minutes, dry to light handling in 1 hour, dry to recoat in
2 hours at 77 0F. Force
drying ovens may |
be
used; allow 15 minutes minimum for flashoff of solvent before heating. CLEANUP Clean
equipment with xylol or toluol before the film dries. ENVIRONMENTAL This
product meets current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and
ozone reactive emissions. It is VOC
compliant for the railcar and
maintenance industries, and contains no lead or chromate. Read and understand Material Safety Data
Sheet for this product before using. PHYSICAL
