WHITE WATER BASED LOW TEMPERATURE BAKING ENAMEL

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Pruett-Schaffer’s #28-52 White Enamel is a single component, melamine cross-linked water reducible alkyd paint. It is designed as a spray-applied, high gloss, low temperature bake exterior finish coat for metal substrates. The cured film exhibits good hardness and corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, and high distinctness of image.

RECOMMENDED USES

This product is recommended as a maintenance coating for equipment and machinery, steel drums, shelving, bins and tanks. It exhibits good application characteristics and adhesion to a wide variety of substrates including minimally prepared cold rolled steel, castings, forgings, aluminum, and existing coatings. Not recommended for immersion service. The paint is not flammable and has very low toxicity.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Apply direct-to-metal. For best results substrates should be blasted to SSPC-SP-6 minimum, with a 1-mil blast profile. Feather all rough or sharp edges. This coating is tolerant of less than perfect surface preparation however, so chemical cleaning, water blasting, or even hand or power tool leaning may be sufficient, depending on the level of service required. At a minimum for acceptable performance, all surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry and free of oil/grease, loose rust/paint, weld spatter, burning slag, dust, and chalk.

THINNING

Under normal conditions no thinning is necessary or desirable. Thin if necessary for proper spraying with an 80/20 mixture of water/butyl cellosolve (Pruett-Schaffer thinner #98-8937). Add thinner a little at a time with constant gentle agitation to a maximum of 5% by volume.

APPLICATION EQUIPMENT

This paint may be applied by air-assisted or airless spray. Use spray tips of 0.013-.020 inch. Apply 3 mils wet to get 1 mil dry film thickness.

CURE TIME

Allow a 3-minute solvent flashoff period before baking. Bake at 270 deg. F for 6 minutes. This coating can withstand 30 minute overbake without harm to its properties other than yellowing.

CLEANUP

Clean equipment with warm soap and water before the film dries. Run ethyl alcohol through spray guns after cleaning to prevent corrosion of steel parts.

ENVIRONMENTAL

This product meets current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and ozone reactive emissions. It contains no lead, chromate, or zinc.
