GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Pruett-Schaffer’s #28-105 Black Enamel is a waterbased, fast air-drying, hybrid paint. It is designed for use as a one-coat gloss topcoat for use over metal springs.
RECOMMENDED USES
This product is recommended as an OEM coating for springs It exhibits the same excellent application characteristics of a waterbased alkyd, yet offers improved exterior durability and flexibility, gloss retention, and faster dry times. Improved adhesion is achieved by using a hybrid paint system. The product is shipped in concentrated form & must be reduced with water to 7-10% solids for use as a "quench" coating where hot springs are dipped into the reduced concentrate.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Apply as a direct-to-metal topcoat. This coating is tolerant of less than perfect surface preparation. Hard drawn wire may have early adhesion issues if there is an excess of drawing compound. Adhesion improves with age over such surfaces. At a minimum for acceptable performance, all surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry, and free of oil and grease, loose rust, dust, and chalk.

THINNING
Thin with water to 7-10% solids with water. For every 10 gals of 28-105 as shipped add 37 Gals. of water to achieve 7.5% solids. Add water slowly with agitation to prevent shocking the concentrate. Too much agitation may cause foam.
APPLICATION EQUIPMENT
This paint should be applied by dipping. Film thickness & final appearance are greatly affected by the dwell time of the hot spring in the reduced paint. Excessive film thicknesses will bubble & remain slightly tacky for longer periods of time. Excessive dwell times result in the washing-off of the coating. Ph and solids should be checked daily. Add Ammonia to maintain a Ph of 8-9 for successful results! Alternately AMP-95 or similar slower drying amine can be substituted for Ammonia for greater Ph stability with a slight increase in tackiness.
DRYING TIME
Dries tack free in 2-3 minutes at 77 F and 50% Relative Humidity on a warm spring. Light handling may be possible then. High humidity will prolong dry time more so than low temperatures. To speed the dry time, good air movement over the work space and local exhaust is recommended. Heat lamps or forced warm air drying will reduce dry time in cold shops.
CLEANUP
Clean equipment with warm soap and water or water/butyl cellosolve in an 80/20 mixture before the film dries.
