RED OXIDE FIRE RETARDANT WATER BASED
PRIMER |

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Pruett-Schaffer’s
#27-2 Red Oxide Primer is a fast air-drying, water based shop primer. It is
formulated from a very dense polyvinylidene copolymer, which imparts
flame-retardant properties and increases the dielectric strength and
breakdown voltage of the coating. This coating has very good adhesion to a
variety of substrates, and is suitable for both interior and exterior use. It
exhibits excellent abrasion resistance, acid, caustic, salt, chemical, and
solvent resistance. RECOMMENDED USES This
product is recommended for use as a low gloss, spray-applied, corrosion-
resistant primer coating for metal. May be used in extremely corrosive
environments. It will act as a universal primer and may be overcoated with
alkyds, vinyls, epoxies, and urethanes, in either solvent- or water-based
formulations. This coatings' flame retardant properties result from heat
induced release of water and fire extinguishing chlorine compounds, which
limits the spread of the flame with much reduced smoke development. This
coating is not recommended for water immersion service or for areas subject
to constant temperatures in excess of 180 0F. SURFACE PREPARATION For best results, substrates should be
blasted to SSPC-SP-6 minimum, with a 1-mil blast profile. Feather all rough or sharp edges. This
coating is very tolerant of less than perfect surface preparation however,
and chemical cleaning, water blasting, or even hand or power tool cleaning
may be sufficient, depending on the
level of service required. At a |
minimum
for acceptable performance, all surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry and
free of oil/grease, loose rust/paint, weld spatter, burning slag, dust, and
chalk. THINNING Under
normal conditions, no thinning is necessary or desirable. Thin if necessary for proper spraying with
water. Add thinner a little at a time with constant gentle agitation to a
maximum of 5% by volume. APPLICATION EQUIPMENT This
paint may be applied by brush, roller or spray equipment, but air-assisted or
airless spray is the preferred method. Brushes should be of polyester or
nylon construction. Use roller covers with 3/8- to 1/4-inch
nap. Spray equipment should be stainless steel. Use spray tips of 0.015-0.020
inch. DRYING TIME Dries
to recoat in 15-20 minutes at 77 0F and 50% Relative Humidity. Allow to
dry for 1 hour if recoating with 2-component paints containing active
solvents such as ketones. High humidity will prolong the dry time more so
than low temperatures. To speed the
dry time, good air movement over the work and local exhaust is
recommended. Forced warm air-drying
will reduce the dry time in cold shops, but heat lamps are not recommended as
they cause accelerated surface drying and trap solvent within the paint film. CLEANUP Clean
equipment with warm soap and |
water
before the film dries. Run ethyl alcohol through spray guns after cleaning to
prevent corrosion of steel parts. ENVIRONMENTAL This
product meets current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and
ozone reactive emissions, and is VOC compliant for the railcar and
architectural maintenance industries. It contains no chromate and complies
with current federal regulations regarding the use of lead in paint. PHYSICAL PARAMETERS VOC, U.S. EPA
