EPOXY ESTER ZINC-RICH WELDABLE PRIMER

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Pruett-Schaffer’s #19-3 Zinc-Rich Primer is a single-package, fast air-drying, solvent-based metal primer based on an epoxy ester vehicle. It is heavily filled with zinc dust to provide good sacrificial corrosion prevention of ferrous metals in aggressive environments.

RECOMMENDED USES

This product is recommended for general maintenance use on railcars, storage tanks, machinery, and other steel equipment wherever a good quality, corrosion resistant primer is needed. It exhibits exceptional adhesion to a variety of substrates including minimally prepared, cold rolled steel, forgings, and castings. It may be used as a replacement for or as a touchup of conventional galvanized metal. The epoxy ester vehicle in this primer exhibits very low burnback characteristics and good electrical conductivity, resulting in a very serviceable weldable primer. It is not recommended for chemical immersion service or for areas subject to severe abrasion.

SURFACE PREPARATION

For maximum protection in severe service, metal substrates should be blasted in accordance with SSPC-SP-6 with a 1-mil profile. This coating has excellent wetting and penetrating ability and is tolerant of less than perfect surface preparation, so hand or power tool cleaning may be sufficient for some uses. At a minimum for acceptable performance, surfaces to be coated must

be clean and dry, and free of oil/grease, loose rust/paint, weld spatter, burning slag, dust, and chalk. Feather all rough or sharp edges. Chalky or dusty surfaces should be power washed and allowed to dry completely.

THINNING

Under normal conditions, no thinning is necessary. Thin if necessary for spraying with xylol or high flash aromatic naphtha. Add a little at a time with constant gentle agitation to a maximum of 10% by volume. Caution: this material thins rapidly, overthinning will cause rapid settling of the zinc dust in the coating. In ambient temperatures over 85 0F, aromatic 100 or aromatic 150 naphtha may be used for thinning if "dry spraying" occurs.

APPLICATION EQUIPMENT

May be applied by roller, brush, or conventional or airless spray. Airless spray gives the best results, use .015-.020 inch tip size. Brushes should be of polyester or nylon construction. If applying with a cup type spray gun, thinning may improve application. Apply to 2-5 mils dry film thickness.

DRYING TIME

Dries to touch and water resistance in 1 hour at 77 0F. Dry to light handling in 24 hours. Force drying ovens may be used, allow 30 minutes minimum for flashoff of solvent before heating.

 CLEANUP

Clean equipment with xylol or high flash aromatic naphtha before the film dries.

ENVIRONMENTAL

This product meets current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and ozone reactive emissions. It is VOC compliant for the railcar and architectural maintenance industries, and contains no lead or chromate.
