GRAY ABRASION RESISTANT EPOXY |

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Pruett-Schaffer’s #18-8 Gray is a high performance, two component epoxy for use as a steel or concrete protective coating or lining. This coating is formulated with state-of-the-art bisphenol F epoxy resins and a blend of phenalkamine and cycloaliphatic amine hardeners to provide maximum protection in severe exposures. It exhibits good exterior durability, very good adhesion over a variety of substrates, and exceptional corrosion and chemical resistance. This product contains teflon & high density polyethylene. A fluoropolymer additive provides slip. The high surface slip of the dry film gives excellent abrasion resistance.
RECOMMENDED USES
This material is designed as a spray applied topcoat or direct-to-metal lining. Use to protect machinery, tanks, and structures from corrosion in aggressive environments where chemicals, salt, water, fuels, and oils are present. Formulated with virtually no solvent, this coating will spray in one pass to a dry film build of 15-20 mils, providing excellent protection over hard-to-cover sharp edges and complex geometric shapes.
SURFACE PREPARATION
For severe service, application over primer is recommended (Pruett-Schaffer #18-13275 Yellow Oxide Epoxy Primer or equivalent OR 10 series solvent based epoxy primer). Metal substrates should be blasted to an SSPC-SP-10 white metal blast with a 1.5 to 2.0 mil blast profile. A
|
SP-6 commercial blast may be sufficient for many repair or DTM applications with less severe requirements. This coating is very tolerant of poor surface preparation. For new or tightly adhering existing coatings, degreasing and hand tool cleaning, power washing, brush blasting, sanding, or a combination of these methods may be acceptable. All surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry and free of oil and grease, loose rust or paint, weld spatter, burning slag, dust, and chalk.
MIXING AND POT LIFE
The recommended minimum application temperature is 40 F. Mix 3 parts by volume #18-8-A with 2 parts 18-b Hardener. Use immediately, there is no induction time. Pot life when mixed in 4-gallon lots: 1 hour at 77 F.
THINNING AND CLEANUP
Thin and cleanup equipment with xylol. Thin only when necessary; add a little solvent at a time to the mixed system with constant gentle agitation to a maximum of 5% by volume.
APPLICATION EQUIPMENT
Apply by airless spray equipment; use .017-.021 inch tip size and a 30:1 pump ratio with a 3 gallon per minute output. Apply 15-20 mils wet film thickness to yield 15+ mils dry film thickness. |
CURE TIMES & TEMPERATURES
Cures tack free in 4-6 hours at 77 F. Will cure down to 40 F, but curing time will appreciably lengthen below 60 F. Allow 3-7 days cure at 70 F before placing into severe service, longer if the ambient temperature is lower than 60 F.
ENVIRONMENTAL
This product meets current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and ozone reactive emissions. It is VOC compliant for the architectural maintenance industry, contains no chromate or zinc, and complies with current federal regulations regarding the use of lead in paint.
