BLACK HI BUILD EPOXY MASTIC COATING |

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Pruett-Schaffer’s
#14-17038 Black epoxy Mastic is a high-build, two component,
polyamidoamine-cured epoxy for use as a heavy duty maintenance or
encapsulation coating. It is designed
as a brush or spray applied topcoat, intermediate coating, or direct-to-metal
coating. It has good exterior durability, very good adhesion over a wide
variety of substrates, and exceptional corrosion and chemical resistance. RECOMMENDED USES Use
to protect machinery, tanks, and structures from corrosion in aggressive
environments where chemicals, salt, water, fuels, and oils are present. Formulated to allow high film build in one
pass to protect hard to cover sharp edges.
Suitable for topcoating if desired with a wide variety of epoxy,
urethane, vinyl, or acrylic emulsion topcoats. SURFACE PREPARATION For
severe service, metal substrates should be blasted to an SSPC-SP-10 white
metal blast with a 1.0 +/- .5 mil blast profile, and applied over
epoxy primer. An SP-6 commercial
blast may be sufficient for many repair or DTM applications with less severe
requirements. This coating is very
tolerant of poor surface preparation. For tightly adhering existing coatings,
degreasing and hand tool cleaning, power washing, brush blasting, sanding, or
a combination of these methods may be acceptable. All surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry and free of oil
and grease, loose rust or paint, weld spatter, burning slag, dust, and chalk. |
MIXING AND POT LIFE The
recommended minimum application temperature when using 14-B Hardener is 55 0F. Between 55-40 0F, add cold weather accelerator
(Pruett-Schaffer part number #14-13715) to 14-17038-A/14-B at a rate of 1
pint per 5 gallons mixed system or mix
14-17038-A with 14-W Winter Hardener (see Table below). When air or
substrate temperatures are below 40 0F use 14-17038-A only with 14-W
Winter Hardener. Air or substrate Hardener Temperature, 0F > 55 14-B 55 - 40 14-B with Accelerator or 14-W < 40 14-W Mix
4 parts by volume #14-17038-A with 1 part 14-B or 14-W Winter Hardener. Use
immediately, there is no induction time. Pot life when mixed in 5-gallon
lots: 6-8 hours at 77 0F;
2 hours at 90 0F.
Pot life will shorten markedly if cold weather accelerator is added. THINNING
AND CLEANUP Thin
and cleanup equipment with xylol or toluol.
Add a little solvent at a time to the mixed system with constant
gentle agitation to a maximum of 5% by volume. APPLICATION EQUIPMENT May
be applied by brush, roller, or airless spray. Airless spray gives the best results, use .015-.020 inch tip
size. Apply 5-9 mils wet film
thickness to yield 4-7 mils dry film thickness. Brushes should be of polyester or nylon construction.
Application using cup-type spray gun is not recommended. |
CURE TIMES & TEMPERATURES Cures
set-to-touch in 4-5 hours at 77 0F; 2 hr at 90 0F, 24-48 hr at < 40 0F.
Recoat or topcoat within 8-48 hours or reduced adhesion of the second
coat may result. Allow 7-10 days cure at 70 0F before placing into severe service,
longer if ambient temperature is lower than 40 0F. ENVIRONMENTAL his
product meets current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and
ozone reactive emissions. It is VOC
compliant for the architectural maintenance industry, contains no chromate or
zinc, and complies with current federal regulations regarding the use of lead
in paint. PHYSICAL
