ANSI 70 GRAY EPOXY GLOSS MASTIC COATING

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Pruett-Schaffer’s #14-16373 Gray Epoxy Mastic is a high-build, two component, polyamidoamine-cured epoxy for use as a heavy duty maintenance or encapsulation coating. It is designed as a brush or spray applied topcoat, intermediate coating, or direct-to-metal coating. It has good exterior durability, very good adhesion over a wide variety of substrates, and exceptional corrosion and chemical resistance.

RECOMMENDED USES

Use to protect machinery, tanks, and structures from corrosion in aggressive environments where chemicals, salt, water, fuels, and oils are present. Formulated to allow high film build in one pass to protect hard to cover sharp edges. Suitable for topcoating if desired with a wide variety of epoxy, urethane, vinyl, or acrylic emulsion topcoats.

SURFACE PREPARATION

For severe service, metal substrates should be blasted to an SSPC-SP-10 white metal blast with a 1.0 +/- .5 mil blast profile, and applied over epoxy primer. An SP-6 commercial blast may be sufficient for many repair or DTM applications with less severe requirements. This coating is very tolerant of poor surface preparation. For tightly adhering existing coatings, degreasing and hand tool cleaning, power washing, brush blasting, sanding, or a combination of these methods may be acceptable. All surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry and free of oil and grease, loose rust or paint, weld spatter, burning slag, dust, and chalk.

MIXING AND POT LIFE

The recommended minimum application temperature when using 14-BG Hardener is 0 F. Mix 4 parts by volume #14-26373-A with 1 part 14-BG Hardener. Do not use more or less hardener. Using the incorrect amount will result in permanently soft or tacky films with poor chemical resistance. Use immediately, there is no induction time. Pot life when mixed in 5-gallon lots: 3-4 hours at 77 F; 1-2 hours at 90 F. Do not reuse previously used mixing containers; partially cured material will greatly accelerate the cure of freshly mixed paint resulting in dramatically reduced pot life. Do NOT add freshly mixed epoxy into previously mixed epoxy that has been sitting for more than 15 minutes!

THINNING AND CLEANUP

Thin and cleanup equipment with xylol or toluol. Add a little solvent at a time to the mixed system with constant gentle agitation to a maximum of 5% by volume.

APPLICATION EQUIPMENT

May be applied by brush, roller, or airless spray. Airless spray gives the best results, use .015-.020 inch tip size. Apply 5-8 mils wet film thickness to yield 4-6 mils dry film thickness. Brushes should be of polyester or nylon construction. Application using cup-type spray gun is not recommended.

CURE TIMES & TEMPERATURES

Cures set-to-touch in 4-5 hours at 77 F; 2 hr at 90 F, 24-48 hr at < 40 F. Recoat or topcoat within 8-48 hours or reduced adhesion of the second coat may result. Allow 7-10 days cure at 70 F before placing into severe service, longer if ambient temperature is lower than 40 F.

ENVIRONMENTAL

This product meets current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and ozone reactive emissions. It is VOC compliant for the architectural maintenance industry, contains no chromate or zinc, and complies with current federal regulations regarding the use of lead in paint.
