BLACK FAST DRY EPOXY / SEMI-GLOSS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Pruett-Schaffer’s #13-9 Gray Epoxy is a two component, Phenalkamine cured epoxy for use as a heavy duty primer, mid-coat or maintenance top coat. It is designed as a semi-gloss, brush or spray applied, corrosion resistant, ferrous metal coating. It exhibits excellent adhesion over a wide variety of substrates, and exceptional corrosion and chemical resistance.

RECOMMENDED USES

Use to protect machinery, tanks, and structures from corrosion in aggressive environments where chemicals, salt, water, fuels, and oils are present. Formulated to allow high film build in one pass to protect hard to cover sharp edges. Suitable for topcoating with a wide variety of epoxy, urethane, vinyl, or acrylic emulsion topcoats. May also be used as an encapsulation coating. This epoxy will chalk, topcoating is necessary for long term weathering exposure. Can be used for immersion service.

SURFACE PREPARATION

For severe service, metal substrates should be blasted to an SSPC-SP-10 white metal blast with a 1.5 +/- .5 mil blast profile. An SP-6 commercial blast may be sufficient for many repair or DTM applications with less severe requirements. This coating is very tolerant of poor surface preparation; for tightly adhering existing coatings, degreasing and hand tool cleaning, power washing, brush blasting, sanding, or a combination

of these methods may be acceptable. All surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry and free of oil and grease, loose rust and paint, weld spatter, burning slag, dust, and chalk.

MIXING INSTRUCTIONS

Mix 4 parts by volume #13-9-A with 1 part 13-9-B Hardener. Mix at slow speed to avoid entraining air into the paint. Use at once, there is no induction time.

THINNING

Thin if necessary for spraying with xylol or toluol. Add a little solvent at a time to the mixed system with constant gentle agitation to a maximum of 5% by volume.

APPLICATION EQUIPMENT

May be applied by air assisted or airless spray or siphon equipment. Airless spray gives the best results, use .015-.020 inch tip size. Apply 4.5-7 mils wet film thickness to yield 3-5 mils dry film thickness. Minimum film thickness for constant immersion service should be 10+ mils.

CURE TIMES & TEMPERATURES

Cures set-to-touch in 1-1.5 hours at 77 F, and dry to handle in 2-4 hours. Topcoat within 3-48 hours or reduced adhesion of the second coat may result. Allow 7-10 days cure at 70 F before placing into severe service, longer if ambient temperature is lower. Recommended minimum application temperature is 40 F. Below 40 F use 13-W winter cure hardener.

13-W will cause yellowing in light colors !

CLEANUP

Clean equipment with xylol or toluol before the film cures.

ENVIRONMENTAL

This product meets current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and ozone reactive emissions. It is VOC compliant for the architectural maintenance industry, and contains no lead, chromate, or zinc.
