ZINC RICH EPOXY PRIMER

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Pruett-Schaffer’s #10-1 Zinc Rich Epoxy Primer is a  Zinc filled, two component, phenalkamine-cured epoxy for use as a heavy-duty maintenance primer.  It is designed as a brush or spray applied, corrosion resistant, ferrous metal coating to replace galvanizing or INORGANIC ZINC .  It  exhibits excellent adhesion over a wide variety of substrates, and exceptional corrosion and chemical resistance. Zinc is premixed into the A side for easier use. No sifting & stirring. This product contains 77.2% zinc in the dry film.

RECOMMENDED USES

Oftentimes it is used as a replacement for Inorganic Zinc when it is not possible to blast the metal substrate. Use to protect machinery, tanks, and structures from corrosion in aggressive environments where chemicals, salt, water, fuels, and oils are present.  Formulated to allow high film build in one pass to protect hard to cover sharp edges.  Suitable for topcoating with a wide variety of epoxy, urethane, vinyl, or acrylic emulsion topcoats. Not recommended for concentrated acid or bases because of reaction with the zinc and not recommended over existing coatings because the galvanic action of the zinc will be negated.

SURFACE PREPARATION

For severe service, metal substrates should be blasted to an SSPC-SP-10 white metal blast with a 1.5 +/- .5 mil blast profile.  An SP-6 commercial blast may be sufficient for many repair or DTM applications with less severe requirements.

Degreasing and hand tool  or power tool cleaning, power washing, brush blasting, sanding, or a combination of these may produce acceptable surfaces for many applications. All surfaces to be coated must be clean, dry and free of oil and grease, loose rust and paint, weld spatter, burning slag, dust, and chalk.

MIXING INSTRUCTIONS

Mix 4 parts by volume #10-1-A with 1 part 10-1-B Hardener.  Mix at slow speed to avoid entraining air into the paint.  Use at once, there is no induction time.

THINNING

Thin if necessary for spraying with xylol or toluol.  Add a little solvent at a time to the mixed system with constant gentle agitation to a maximum of 5% by volume.

APPLICATION EQUIPMENT

May be applied by brush or airless spray.  Airless spray gives the best results, use .015-.020 inch tip size.  Apply 7-8 mils wet film thickness to yield 3-4 mils dry film thickness.  Brushes should be of polyester or nylon construction.  Application with a cup type spray gun is not recommended.

CURE TIMES & TEMPERATURES

Cures set-to-touch in 1-2 hours at 77 0F, approximately 30 minutes at 90 0F.  Topcoat within 8-48 hours or reduced adhesion of the second coat may result.  Allow 7-10 days cure at 70 0F before placing into severe service, longer if ambient temperature is lower.  Recommended

minimum application temperature is 40 0F.  Below 40 0F add cold weather accelerator (Pruett-Schaffer part number #13-13715) at a rate of 1/2 pint per 5 gallons mixed system; this will result in a 24-48 hour cure time. DO NOT ADD MORE THAN 1/2 PINT!

CLEANUP

Clean equipment with xylol or toluol before the film cures.

ENVIRONMENTAL

This product meets current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and ozone reactive emissions.  It is VOC compliant for most industry, and contains no chromate.
