96-SERIES

QUICK DRYING LACQUERS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Pruett-Schaffer’s 96-Series Lacquers are single component, very fast air-drying, solvent based, chainstopped alkyd coatings. They are designed for use as cost-effective maintenance finish coats over metal substrates. They feature good exterior durability, easy spray application with thin film hiding, and extremely fast dry in a conventional solids formulation. They can be supplied in semi-gloss or high gloss finishes, in a wide range of colors including Federal 595 and OSHA safety colors.

RECOMMENDATIONS

96 Series are recommended for use over ferrous metal substrates exposed to normal atmospheric and industrial conditions anywhere a good general purpose alkyd maintenance enamel may be used and very fast dry is required. They are formulated to be applied over primer or used direct-to-metal. They will resist UV-induced chalking and fading, and provide excellent long term and cost effective protection for maintenance of heavy equipment, implements, and steel structures. 96-Series Lacquers are not recommended for use on wood or other dimensionally unstable substrates, and should not be used in immersion or several chemical exposure service.

 SURFACE PREPARATION

 For standard service, metal substrates

should be degreased and sandblasted in accordance with SSPC-SP-6 commercial blast with a <1-mil profile. Less rigorous surface preparation may result in good serviceability in normal conditions, for example chemical cleaning or power sanding/brushing. Existing paints should be deglossed by brush blasting or sanding; if the surface is chalky or extremely dirty, power wash it first and allow to dry. Feather all rough edges.

 THINNING

May be thinned with toluene or MIBK, but these paints are shipped ready to use and normally need no thinning. Over thinning may cause curtaining or sagging.

APPLICATION EQUIPMENT

Conventional air or airless spray equipment is the preferred method and will result in the best performing protective coatings. Dip coating is also typically used. Recommended dry film build is 1-2 mils when applied over primer, 2-3 mils when applied direct-to-metal.

 DRYING TIMES & TEMPERATURES

These paints are very fast drying. Typical tack free dry times of 5-10 minutes in normal shop conditions (70 0F) are attainable when spraying 1 to 2 mils wet film in a single pass. These lacquers may be recoated in about 1 hour if desired, ultimate cure is achieved in 3-5 days.

CLEANUP

Cleans up easily with toluol or xylol before the paint dries hard.

 ENVIRONMENTAL

These products do NOT meet current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and ozone reactive emissions. They contain no zinc or chromate and comply with current federal regulations regarding the use of lead in paint.
