60-SERIES

MOISTURE-CURED URETHANE PRIMERS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Pruett-Schaffer’s 60-series coatings are solvent thinned, aromatic isocyanate-based urethane primers for use over metal or concrete structures. These primers are user friendly, single component systems and cure by reacting with atmospheric moisture, offering ease of handling with no on site mixing or pot life limitations. They are low in viscosity but high in solids resulting in good coverage over sharp edges and complete wetting of rough surfaces. They contain no toxic lead or chromate’s, are VOC compliant, and may be topcoated with a wide variety of high performance coatings.

RECOMMENDATIONS

60 Series are designed to be used as a penetrating and sealing primers for use over previously painted, rough, or rusted metal surfaces. They will penetrate, seal and reinforce the cracks and pores of tightly adhering rust and old paint. They excel where it is expensive or impossible to conventionally prepare surfaces for repainting by sandblasting or grinding; as encapsulation coatings where complete removal of failing lead-containing paint is undesirable; and where painting in high humidity or over damp surfaces is required. They are highly recommended for use in areas where environmental chemicals create a corrosive environment, and will resist solvents, gasoline, dilute acid and alkali, water, oil, and salt. These primers require a topcoat of conventional ultraviolet resistant paint for normal service lifetimes.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Moisture cure urethanes are designed to be applied to surfaces with minimum preparation, and display excellent adhesion to existing coatings, tightly adhering rust, and even damp surfaces. For best results, however, it is advisable to remove very loose rust, grease, oil, dirt and mud, and extensive areas of very loose or badly flaking coatings before applying. Hollow or water-filled blisters on painted surfaces should be scraped off. Use this primer over tightly adhering, cracking, checking, chalking, or alligatoring paint, and mold or mildew is permissible.

 THINNING

May be thinned with xylol 5% by volume maximum.

 APPLICATION EQUIPMENT

Brushing or rolling is the recommended application method and will result in better wetting and penetration of rough surfaces than will spray application. Typical recommended dry film build per coat is 1 -2 mils when brushed.

 DRYING TIMES & TEMPERATURES

Cures set-to-touch in 3-5 hours @ 70 0F and 50% Relative Humidity; higher humidity or damp surfaces will speed cure times. Recoating must be done after hard cure is achieved (usually 8 hours or more) and before 7 days, or reduced adhesion of the

topcoat may result. Allow 7-10 days cure before placing into severe service.

 CLEANUP

Clean up with xylol, MEK, or toluol.

 ENVIRONMENTAL

This product meets current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and ozone reactive emissions. It is VOC compliant for the architectural and maintenance industry, and contains no lead, or chromate.
