PRODUCT NUMBER

PRODUCT NAME

37-SERIES

ALKYD BRUSHING ENAMELS

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Pruett-Schaffer’s 37-Series coatings are single component, air-drying, solvent based, long oil length alkyd coatings. They have been one of the workhorse maintenance enamels for years due to their cost effectiveness, good exterior durability and ease of use. These coatings are available in high solids formulations, and can be supplied in flat, semi- or high-gloss finish, in a complete range of colors including Mil Spec, Federal 595 and OSHA safety colors, and custom colors.

RECOMMENDATIONS

37 Series are recommended for use over metal or wood substrates exposed to normal atmospheric and industrial conditions anywhere a good general-purpose alkyd maintenance enamel may be used. These paints have good surface wetting properties for use when it is difficult to completely clean surfaces prior to painting. They may be applied over primer, direct-to-metal, or over existing coatings. They will provide good long term and cost effective protection for maintenance of heavy equipment, implements, and wood and steel structures. 37-Series coatings should not be used in water immersion or chemical exposure service, or where service temperatures will exceed 225 0F.

SURFACE PREPARATION

New metal substrates should be degreased, chemically cleaned, or sandblasted, then primed for best

performance. Power sanding or brushing followed by spot priming should be used to prepare rusted steel surfaces. Existing coatings, if tightly adhering, should be deglossed if necessary by brush blast or sanding; if the surface is chalky or extremely dirty, power wash it first and allow to dry. Feather all rough edges. Mold or fungus growth should be removed prior to painting.

THINNING

May be thinned with xylol, mineral spirits or aromatic naphtha, but these paints are shipped ready to use and normally need no thinning. Overthinning may cause curtaining or sagging.

APPLICATION EQUIPMENT

Brush or roller application is the usual method of application but air or airless spray equipment may be used if desired and will perform equally well. They will usually require thinning to spray. Typical recommended dry film build is 2-3 mils per coat when applied over primer or existing coatings; 3-4 mils dry when applying a single coat direct-to-metal.

DRYING TIMES & TEMPERATURES

These paints typically dry tack free in 3 - 6 hours in normal shop conditions (70 0F) when brushed 3 to 6 mils wet film in a single pass. They may be recoated in 24 hours if needed, ultimate cure is achieved in 7-10 days at 70 0F.

CLEANUP

Cleans up easily with xylol before the paint dries hard.

ENVIRONMENTAL

These products meets current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and ozone reactive emissions. They are VOC compliant for architectural and maintenance use and industry, contain no zinc or chromate, and comply with current federal regulations regarding the use of lead in paint.
