GENERAL DESCRIPTION Pruett-Schaffer’s 36-Series coatings are single component, air-drying, solvent based, medium oil length alkyd coatings. They have been one of the workhorse utility enamels for OEM painting for many years due to their cost effectiveness, good exterior durability and easy spray application with good thin film hiding. These coatings are available in conventional solids formulations only, and can be supplied in flat, semi- or high-gloss finishes, in a complete range of colors including Mil Spec, Federal 595 and OSHA safety colors, and custom colors. They are NOT VOC compliant. RECOMMENDATIONS 36 Series are recommended for use over ferrous metal substrates exposed to normal atmospheric and industrial conditions anywhere a good general-purpose alkyd maintenance enamel may be used. These paints have good surface wetting properties for use when it is difficult to completely clean surfaces prior to painting. Formulated to be applied over primer, they may also be used direct-to-metal in many circumstances. They will provide good long term and cost effective protection for maintenance of heavy equipment, implements, and steel structures. 36-Series coatings may be used on wood and other dimensionally unstable substrates when properly formulated (by request), but should not be used in immersion or severe chemical exposure service. |
SURFACE PREPARATION For best performance, new metal substrates should be degreased, chemically cleaned, or sandblasted then primed. Power sanding or brushing followed by spot priming should be used to prepare rusted steel surfaces. Existing coatings, if tightly adhering, should be deglossed if necessary by brush blast or sanding; if the surface is chalky or extremely dirty, power wash it first and allow to dry. Feather all rough edges. THINNING May be thinned with xylol, mineral spirits or aromatic naphtha, but these paints are shipped ready to use and normally need no thinning. Overthinning may cause curtaining or sagging. APPLICATION EQUIPMENT Conventional air or airless spray equipment is the preferred method of application and will result in the best performing protective coating. Brush application may be used if desired. Typical recommended dry film build is 2-3 mils per coat when applied over primer, 3-4 mils when applied direct-to-metal. DRYING TIMES & TEMPERATURES These paints typically dry tack free dry in 2 - 4 hours in normal shop conditions (70 0F) when spraying 2 to 3 mils wet film in a single pass. They may be recoated in 8 hours if needed, ultimate cure is achieved in 5-7 days at 70 0F.
