34-SERIES

DIRECT-TO-METAL ALKYD COATINGS

 GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Pruett-Schaffer’s 34-Series coatings are single component, air-drying, solvent based, modified alkyd formulations designed for use as maintenance finish coats over metal substrates. They exhibit good flexibility and exterior durability. Formulated as direct-to-metal coatings, they have very good corrosion resistance in normal industrial use and have been engineered to allow high film build with a single spray gun pass, providing thicker protection over hard to cover sharp edges and complex shapes. These coatings can be supplied in semi-gloss or high gloss finishes and in a complete range of colors including Federal 595 and OSHA safety colors.

RECOMMENDATIONS

34 Series paints are recommended for use over ferrous metal substrates exposed to normal atmospheric and industrial conditions; anywhere a good general-purpose alkyd maintenance enamel may be used. They will resist chalking and fading, and provide excellent long term and cost effective protection for railroad freight cars, tanks, equipment, and other steel structures. 34-Series coatings are not recommended for use on wood or other dimensionally unstable substrates, and should not be used in immersion or severe chemical exposure service.

SURFACE PREPARATION

For standard service, metal substrates should be degreased and sandblasted in accordance with SSPC-SP-6 commercial blast with a 1-mil profile. Existing paints should be deglossed by brush blasting or sanding; if the surface is chalky or extremely dirty, power wash it first and allow to dry.

 THINNING

May be thinned with xylol or mineral spirits, but these paints are shipped ready to use and normally need no thinning. Overthinning may cause curtaining or sagging.

 APPLICATION EQUIPMENT

Airless or air-assisted spray equipment is the preferred method and will result in the best appearing finish. Use a .015 to .021 inch spray tip and a 30:1 pump ratio with 3 gallons per minute output. Typical recommended dry film build is 3-4 mils when applied DTM.

 DRYING TIMES & TEMPERATURES

Typical "dry-to-stencil" times of 1-1.5 hours in normal shop conditions are attainable when spraying 6 to 8 mils wet film in a single pass. Because of the thick films it may take 7-10 days for full hardness and abrasion resistance.

CLEANUP

Cleans up easily with xylol before the paint dries hard.

ENVIRONMENTAL

These products meet current air pollution regulations regarding hydrocarbon and ozone reactive emissions. They are VOC compliant for most industry, contain no chromate, and comply with current federal regulations regarding the use of lead in paint.
